This shrug knitting pattern, to fit girls aged between three and 10 years, makes the perfect cover-up for a little girl to wear over summer dresses or tops.
Designed by Martin Storey, the pattern is taken from ‘Rowan Classic Family’ (£7.95).

- Pair each of 4mm and 4.50mm knitting needles

With 4.50mm needles, cast on 60(64:68:72) sts. Beg with a k row, work 28(32:34:36) rows in st-st, ending with RS facing for next row. Back should measure 11(12:13:14)cm.
Shape armholes
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 56(60:64:68) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next row and foll 2(1:1:0) alt rows. 50(56:60:66) sts. Cont straight until armhole measures 15(16:17:18)cm, ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape shoulders and back neck
Next row (RS) Cast off 5(6:7:8) sts, k until there are 9(10:10:11) sts on right needle and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. Work each side of neck separately. Cast off 3 sts at beg of next row. Cast off rem 6(7:7:8) sts. With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem sts, cast off centre 22(24:26:28) sts, k to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.
LEFT FRONT
With 4.50mm needles cast on 3(3:4:5) sts. Beg with a k row, work in st-st as follows: Work 1 row, so ending with WS facing for next row. Cast on 3 sts at beg of next row and foll 2 alt rows. 12(12:13:14) sts. Work 1 row, ending with WS facing for next row. Inc 1 st at shaped front opening edge of next 10 rows, then on foll 4(6:7:8) alt rows. 26(28:30:32) sts. Work 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape armhole
Cast off 2 sts at beg and inc 1 st at end of next row. 25(27:29:31) sts. Work 1 row. Inc 1 st at front opening edge of 3rd and 2 foll 6th rows and at same time, dec 1 st at armhole edge of next and foll 2(1:1:0) alt rows. 25(28:30:33) sts. Shape neck

Shape shoulder

RIGHT FRONT
With 4.50mm needles, cast on 3(3:4:5) sts. Beg with a k row, work in st-st as follows: Work 2 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. SLEEVES

Beg with a k row, work in st-st, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of 11th(15th:17th:19th) and every foll 14th(16th:18th:22nd) row to 44(44:44:50) sts, then on every foll –(18th:20th:–) row until there are –(46:48:–) sts. Cont straight until sleeve measures 25(29:33:37) cm, ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape top
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 40(42:44:46) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next row and foll 3 alt rows, then on 2 foll 4th rows. 28(30:32:34) sts. Work 1 row, ending with RS facing for next row. Dec 1 st at each end of next and foll 0(1:2:3) alt rows, then on foll 5 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off rem 16 sts.
NECKBAND
Join shoulder seams. With RS facing and 4mm needles, beg and ending at front opening edges, pick up and k23(24:25:26) sts up right side of neck, 28(30:32:34) sts from back, then 23(24:25:26) sts down left side of neck. 74(78:82:86) sts. ** Row 1 (WS) K2, [p2, k2] to end. Row 2 P2, [k2, p2] to end. These 2 rows form rib. Work in rib for a further 4 rows. Beg with a p row, work 4 rows in st-st, so ending with WS facing for next row. Cast off purlwise (on WS). Allow st-st edges to roll onto RS. **
CUFFS
With RS facing and 4mm needles, pick up and k38(38:42:42) sts from cast on edge of sleeve. Work as given for Neckband from ** to **.
FRONT AND HEM BORDER
With RS of collar facing and 4mm circular needle, beg and ending at top of neckband, pick up and k9 sts down row-end edge of neckband to neckband pick-up row (picking up first 2 sts through rolled edge), 53(59:64:68) sts down shaped left front opening edge to base of left side seam, 74(78:84:88) sts from back cast on edge, 53(59:64:68) sts up shaped right front opening edge to neckband pick-up row, then 9 sts up row-end edge of neckband (picking up last 2 sts through rolled edge). 198(214:230:242) sts. Beg with row 1, work in rib as given for Neckband for 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. Row 4 (RS) Rib to last 6 sts, work 2 tog, yrn (to make a buttonhole), rib 4. Work in rib for a further 2 rows. Beg with a p row, work 4 rows in st st, ending with WS facing for next row. Cast off purlwise (on WS).
TO MAKE UP
Sew sleeves into armholes, easing to fit. Sew button onto border to match buttonhole.
