Woman Who Can’t Walk And Man Who Can’t See Team Up To Help Each Other Explore The World Together

0

There are some people who learn to overcome their disabilities in the face of their dreams and there are some who help each other to reach their goals.

When you really want to do something, they say no hurdle can stop you. You will do everything in your power to achieve that dream. Be it working on yourself and becoming better at something, or working with someone to achieve what you want. And that is exactly what these two people did. This woman who can’t walk and a man who can’t see decided to do – team up and make their dreams come true.

Melanie Knecht and Trevor Hahn have shown the world the real meaning of teamwork. Hailing from Fort Collins, Colorado, the hiking buddies have worked together to navigate the nooks and crannies of the Colorado mountains and trails ever since they first met at an adaptive exercise class, reported Good Morning America.

Both of them have had their fair share of pain and drawbacks. Melanie was born with Spina bifida, a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly, and hence uses a wheelchair to make her way around. Trevor, on the other hand, lost his eyesight due to glaucoma five years back in 2014, reported the outlet.

But after that class together, the two started bonding over their mutual love of the outdoors and soon enough, they made the decision to team up and hike together. During their treks, Trevor carries Melanie around by placing her in a secure harness on his back while Melanie gives him directions to guide him along the trails. “It just seemed like common sense,” she told GMA in a recent interview. “He’s the legs, I’m the eyes — boom! Together, we’re the dream team.”

“This way, we both have purpose and this huge responsibility,” Trevor told 5280, Denver’s Mile High Magazine.

He told KDVR News that though he continued to hike and climb mountains after he lost his eyesight, relying on adaptive techniques like following the sound of a bell, it didn’t “really give me a purpose.” “Like, I was just following this bell,” he continued. “It would be really cool if I could have a purpose on the trail.”

Now with Melanie as his partner-in-crime, he feels like he found his purpose. “It made me so happy to help someone experience what I’ve been able to experience my whole life,” he told GMA. “Just getting on top of a mountain, a car can’t get to it, you just feel that sense of accomplishment. The best part is being able to make her smile. That gives me purpose.”

As for Melanie, it’s leaving her wheelchair behind as she goes for her hikes that is the best feeling. “I’ve been in a wheelchair my whole life, and it’s an amazing feeling to leave it literally miles behind on the trail,” she told GMA. “I even couldn’t get in it if I wanted to, and that’s a great feeling.”

The two of them miss no chance to document their travels on the Instagram account @hiking_with_sight. As per their profile, they describe their hikes as “a journey of purpose between two friends, one who cannot see and one who cannot walk,” according to People.

So what’s next for the duo? Well, it’s a hike on a mountain that’s over 14,000 feet tall. “There’s definitely a learning curve,” Melanie told 5280 regarding training for their biggest climb yet. She added that the most important skill the two of them needed is “communication.”

“I’m trying to warn him about obstacles far in advance, but also tell him if he’s about to trip on a rock or root in that moment,” she said. “I have to interrupt myself to give directions.”

“It takes a lot of teamwork,” Trevor added. “If I fall, she falls.”

Melanie also shared her advice for those who have close ones with disabilities. “Ask questions of people with disabilities, to see what they like and what they want to do,” she told GMA. “Don’t not include them because you think they won’t be able to do something.”

Well, we wish them good luck and safe journeys so that they can achieve their dreams.

A Story of a Woman Who Wasn’t Afraid to Become a Laughing Stock to Save Her Kids From Hunger

0

A loving mother would do anything for her children, and Mary Ann Webster (Bevan after marriage) isn’t an exception to this rule: she wasn’t afraid to become an object of ridicule or show her unusual appearance. She had a goal — to feed her children by doing whatever it took. Mary had to overcome cruelty, mocking, and insults from people who wanted to see “the ugliest woman in the world.”

Bright Side was so impressed by this bold woman who became a kind of a hero of her time.

A difficult fate

Mary’s life was pretty ordinary. She was born in London to a large and rather poor family. She had to start working very early and was a nurse in a hospital. Mary was a very attractive lady who dreamed about having a big family herself. Her dream came true: at the age of 29, she got married to Thomas Bevan and gave birth to 4 children.

Later, Mary started experiencing health problems: she suffered from migraines and muscle and joint pain. Doctors couldn’t understand what was going on. But she barely had time to focus on her health since her family needed her.

The disease reveals itself.

Mary started suffering from another symptom: abnormal facial growth and distortion, which led to her “homely” appearance. The young Mrs. Bevan turned into a creature who only slightly resembled a woman.

This disease is called acromegaly, a neuroendocrine disorder that results in an excess amount of growth hormones in the body, which leads to bone, internal organ, and soft tissue enlargement. The disease is often accompanied by headaches and muscle pain. In most cases, acromegaly occurs due to a benign tumor, known as a pituitary adenoma.

Today, doctors can cure this disease successfully, but at the beginning of the 20th century, Mary was in a desperate situation. Each day, she saw her beauty fade away.

An unpleasant title and a check

Mr. Bevan always supported his wife and stood by her side, but his destiny had its own plans. After 11 years of marriage, he died, and Mary became a widow with children and almost no money.

After her husband’s death, Mary accepted any job she could get to try to feed and care for her children. However, she wasn’t offered a good job because of her appearance and people in the streets used to insult her and make fun of her. So, each work day was a challenge.

Things were getting worse and worse until Mary found out that there was something called The World’s Ugliest Woman contest. So she decided to take part in it since the prize was a really big sum of money. She managed to win the contest, but the mass media started writing unpleasant articles about her, and it was really hard for her to read them.

But Mary turned her situation into a stable income. By the way, this contest is still popular in England, but they put the emphasis on frowning now.

Circus and freak show performances

In 1920, she was invited to work in the US and appear in Coney Island’s Dreamland show. She took part in these performances where she had to demonstrate her appearance by wearing certain clothing items that highlighted her unattractiveness and masculinity.

There were other people with unusual features in these shows too: a bearded woman, dwarfs, giants, and Siamese twins — they all were freaks who had to make people laugh or feel like they had seen something unusual.

The audience really liked these cruel shows and Mary was one of the most popular actresses in her group. We only can assume how difficult it was for her to be an object of ridicule. But she overcame all of her challenges for the sake of her children.

In this picture, you can see Mary with her children: her oldest son is wearing a sailor suit, her younger son is in a 3-piece suit, and her daughters are wearing nice dresses. At that time, studio photoshoots weren’t very common, and perhaps this fact indicates that Mary was a more loving and caring mother, than a freak show artist.

She spent most of the remainder of her life in a circus. She had a chance to return to Europe only once, in 1925, when she visited Paris where she took part in an exhibition.

Unfortunately, most people who suffer from acromegaly don’t live very long. Mary died in 1933, at the age of 59. Before she died, she asked her children to bury her in England. This difficult destiny of a loving mother proves that anyone who’s brave enough can nail it.

Of course, we may say she that didn’t have a choice and that it was her only chance, but she wasn’t afraid to use this chance and she turned her disease into a source of income. We don’t know what would happen if she wasn’t sick. We probably wouldn’t know anything about her.

Do you find Mary’s story impressive?

Police Sniper Shoots Hostage Taker From Between Colleague’s Legs

Police Sniper Shoots Hostage Taker From Between Colleague's Legs

A police sniper managed to set up his rifle between the legs of a fellow officer and take out a man who was holding a woman hostage.

SWAT Captain Zeng Hao said it was the first time he had to shoot a suspect – adding even more pressure.

The hostage incident took place on 9 August in Nanning in South China with shocking footage capturing the moment the suspect wrapped his arm around a young woman while holding a knife.

Members of the SWAT team, including chief negotiator Qi Hongwei and Captain Hao, were called out to the scene where the 18-year-old suspect became locked in a two-hour standoff with cops.

Five officers have since been recognised for their bravery during the incident.

Officer Qi recalled: “[The suspect] wasn’t communicating; he refused to speak.

“I asked him where he was from and why he was doing this. Then I asked him to let the girl go and offered him water, but he said no to everything.”

Captain Hao, head of the Nanning SWAT First Tactical Unit, can be seen in the clip setting up his gun around a corner, standing behind one of his colleagues and poking the rifle out between his legs so the hostage-taker wouldn’t spot him.

After two-hours, the talks between the suspect and the negotiator broke down and Captain Hao took his shot – with just four inches of the man to aim at, it was a delicate job, but one he was able to carry off.

The 18-year-old suspect, named only as Huang in local reports, was said to have been killed instantly. The woman held hostage was unhurt.

Hao said: “I’d just finished training when I was called over to assist. I deliberately kept my training gear on in order to find the most suitable sniping position.

“I lay there for about two hours listening to the negotiations. My hands and shoulders went stiff many times, but I managed to stay focused and, in the end, shot the suspect in the head.

“Because the suspect was sitting behind the victim, holding her, only about 10 centimetres(four inches) of his head was exposed. Shooting anywhere else might’ve threatened the hostage, so I ruled out attempting to hit any other body parts.

“I’ve been a policeman for 19 years and taken part in many hostage rescue operations, but this is the first time I’ve had to shoot a suspect.”

Strangers are getting tattoos of an Instagrammer and model’s face and she says is flattered, calling it ‘the biggest compliment’.

“Some people have said it’s strange, but in my opinion so many people get random faces tattooed on them all the time, they just chose mine.

“Most of the time I don’t know they are getting a tattoo and I just get tagged afterwards. It’s crazy.”

The model’s face is emblazoned on bodies across the world, with tattooists as far away as the US and Australia sharing photos of their work featuring Ellie.

One Belfast-based tattoo artist who goes by the name of @johninkflow on Instagram, said: “It was the client that wanted her picture so I just customised it.”

Aaran Haslett from Reading said he spotted a photo of Ellie on Instagram and thought she had ‘good facial features’ for tattoos so he decided to ink a customised image of her on a client’s hand wearing clown make up.

He said: “I found her picture on Instagram but I didn’t ask her as she has about a million followers, so I assumed she wouldn’t reply.

“I’ve also seen her post about tattoos done by her before and she was happy about them so I just assumed she wouldn’t mind.

“She was excited to see the finished result when I tagged her in the design.

“She has good cheek bones, big lips and all that stuff that leads to a better tattoo.”

And after Ellie spotted the tattoo, she was delighted. Taking to Twitter, she said: “So a tattoo artist just sent me this design he will be doing today. So crazy this is the seventh time someone’s had my face tattooed!”

She added: “I think every single tattoo I’ve been tagged in are spot on. The tattoo artists are all incredible at their job.

“With something so specific they must make sure they are going to a top tattoo artist to get it right. I don’t know any of the people who have had them, but I have actually made friends with a couple after they have tagged me.

“One guy is from Australia he actually has two tattoos of me! He’s very sweet.”

Girl Who Went Missing On Train Reunited With Family 20 Years On

Girl Who Went Missing On Train Reunited With Family 20 Years On

A woman whose dad lost her on a train when she was just four years old has been reunitedwith her family 20 years on.

Yulia Gorina’s dad, Viktor Moiseenko, last saw his daughter in 1999 before he fell asleep on a 60 mile train journey from Minsk to Asipovichy, both in Belarus, and has begged his long lost child for forgiveness.

Yulia, now 24, ended up crossing the border from Belarus to Russia and was found by rail tracks in Ryazan, western Russia – some 550 miles from where she went missing and where she still lives today.

Yulia’s parents searched desperately for her and ended up becoming the subjects of a police investigation. As recently as 2017, they were made to take lie detector tests when the case was reopened.

However, the family were reunited after Yulia’s boyfriend, Ilya Kryukov, 31, tracked down the family online, with a DNA test proving Yulia is the daughter of Viktor and Lyudmila Moiseenko.

Yulia said: “It was proved by a DNA test, but it was clear even before, we are so much alike, as soon as we saw the photographs of each other.

“Nobody had any doubts – we are one family. I found not only my mother and father in Belarus, but also brother Dmitry and elder sister Nadezhda.”

Reflecting on their reunion, she said: “We were all in tears. We could not even talk, we only cried and hugged each other.

“My parents have told me that they were searching for me for a long time, that they believed they would find me one day.

“My mother could not stop hugging me, she made me sit on her lap as if I was a little girl. We were chatting till 3am, and then Ilya and I had to go back to Russia – my daughter was waiting for me.”

It is difficult for Yulia to reflect on the three week period between going missing on the train and being found by a Russian police officer – though she recalls travelling with a man and woman who were hiding from police.

She said: “We slept in some abandoned houses. I do not remember all this now.

“I was told I did speak with a Belarus accent, using local words for vegetables like potatoes and onions but I do not know why Russian policemen did not pay any attention to it when they were searching for my family.

“It’s a great pity that people who found me and were walking me around before I was taken into foster care didn’t report their find to police.

“I’ve no clue how I got to Ryazan, I simply can’t imagine it. I remember going on a train but all memories are vague.”

While the past two decades have been incredibly painful for the parents, they said they never gave up on Yulia.

Lyudmila said: “Twenty years is like a whole life, but we never lost hope, we believed – and so we found each other.”

The Lost Photographs

Instagram/martin_vanners

He holds his breath and unwinds the reel by the light of the eerie red bulb. One wrong move and he’ll wreck the negatives. His hands are shaking as he gently shakes the tank. Now, all he can do is wait. But when the waiting is over and he unspools the reel again, he never expects the faint outline to leave him trembling all over. Just what had he found?

Obsession

Instagram/martin_vanners

Martijn van Oers, a Netherlands native and photographer, was infatuated with photography from a young age. He was particularly drawn to old photographs – especially when they had an eerie or sinister undercurrent. So, when he received his first camera on his 12th birthday, he couldn’t have been happier. Naturally, his mother was worried. And she was right to be.

Driver From Hungary Blocks A BMW Illegal Pass On A Railway Crossing

0

We find arrogant drivers not only in our country but also in other countries. The bad reputation of BMW drivers has been confirmed these days by Hungarian as he set himself on the opposite lane with the vehicle along the railway line.

All for the sole purpose of speeding up after railway barriers raised to overtake the Fiat Punto driver.

The scene was captured on camera in the village of Dunavarsány, Hungary, when the barriers were lowered and drivers waited for the path to be safe. An arrogant man in a BMW vehicle drove into the opposite lane to overtake the drivers in front of him.

But his plans were soon destroyed by a Fiat Punto driver who stood first in the line!

When the barriers raised, he took off, closing the way to the BMW driver. As the BMW driver was positioned on opposite lane, he encountered standing vehicles on the other side of the railway crossing … Lesson learned?

7 Ways to Stop Yourself from Overthinking

7 Ways to Stop Yourself from Overthinking

overthinking

Overthinking: Something is on your mind, and you continuously think about it; the thought gets deeper and you start thinking about consequences, events and possibilities. – Urban Dictionary

“ANALYSIS PARALYSIS”

To overthink something is to allow the topic to linger for far too long in your mind. Often, the end result is poor judgement, elevated stress, and inaction.

While it is important to think through something, it is also critical to regularly take action. Inability to act cripples many of the world’s great minds, effectively rendering their brilliant and innovative ideas useless. These are the folks for whom the axiom, “You’re too smart for your own good,” was invented.

The term “analysis paralysis” describes perfectly – in just two words – the dangers of overthinking. When we overanalyze anything, we tend to stress out. As a result, the body releases the stress hormones: epinephrine and cortisol. Because of the flood of stress hormones, we find it much more difficult to think clearly – and sometimes we just freeze up.

It isn’t an exaggeration to say that overthinking can ruin someone’s life. Ruminating on thoughts – good or bad – can halt someone from progressing and moving forward. In turn, this leads to underachievement, frustration, and even mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. It is critical, therefore, that we halt the flood of seemingly never-ending thoughts, especially if they are negative.

HERE ARE 7 WAYS TO STOP YOURSELF FROM OVERTHINKING:

1. BECOME SELF-AWARE

To stop any sort of behavior, we must be aware that it is occurring in the first place. Overthinking is a flood of thoughts that can manifest as physical and mental symptoms, including anxiety, irritability, and lack of concentration. Whenever you notice a stream of disconnected or anxiety-inducing thoughts, cut them off.

2. DISTRACT YOURSELF

When it comes to overthinking, distract yourself by actively disengaging from stressful thoughts. If you find it hard to get back into the swing of positive thinking, distract yourself by taking a break, reading, or playing a game.

3. DON’T SUPPRESS YOUR THOUGHTS

Anyone with an anxiety disorder (including this writer) will tell you that thought suppression is counterproductive. The reason is simple: the brain thinks – that’s what it does. It isn’t unusual to have thoughts enter your head. In fact, you’re probably in trouble if you don’t! That said, don’t tense up and try to “steel” yourself from intrusive thoughts. Instead…

4. BECOME AN OBSERVER

Did you know that pointless rumination – that is, dwelling on bad things – is the primary cause of anxiety and depression? (Which, by the way, are the first and second most common mental health conditions, respectively.)

Observing your thoughts is noticing the things that attempt to pull your attention away from the moment – and then bringing your attention back to your breath, your work, or your body. Notice that this is the opposite of thought suppression!

5. SET REMINDERS

Let’s not kid ourselves: stopping ourselves from overthinking is not an easy feat, as breaking entrenched habits of the brain requires effort. The mind will continue to operate in its “default” mode unless given other directions. In this regard, setting reminders is an excellent method for changing up your mental habits.

Schedule reminders on your computer’s calendar, or put a few Post-Its around your house and office with phrases like “Here and now!” “Where’s your head?” or, “Be an observer.” Repetition is the mother of all learning!

6. FORGET ABOUT BEING PERFECT

Some people think that being a perfectionist would be great. It’s not. In fact, perfectionists tend to have higher rates of anxiety and lower quality of life. An inability to let go, continually second-guessing and comparing themselves, having unrealistic expectations, and always needing to be in control are just a few reasons why perfectionists have a harder time. Paying more attention to the process as opposed to the outcome is good advice for those with a perfectionist streak.

perfect moment

7. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

As mentioned, replacing habits of overthinking can be difficult. That said, it is important to challenge your overthinking and build new thought processes. When it comes to any form of anxiety, mindfulness meditation may just be the best antidote. Mindfulness meditation requires focusing on the present, most often through paying attention to your breathing.

You can find numerous smartphone apps and free online resources on mindfulness meditation. If you’re new to meditation, start out with a 5-10 minute session and slowly build up from there.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to be patient. Understand that setbacks are part of changing any habit, including those of our brain.

Pay attention to the present moment. Slow down and focus your attention on what’s going on here and now. Don’t overthink the past or worry too much about the future.

After all, “Life is a journey, not a destination.”
